In kindergarten, students are working hard to learn and master letter sounds (phonics) and to identify and manipulate the individual sounds in words (phonemic awareness). These skills lay the foundation to become strong readers!
This page provides resources to support those skills at home. The materials below, including example words and practice texts, align with what students are currently learning in class.

How to practice connected texts at home.
Echo Reading: Echo reading improves reading fluency and confidence by having a reader mimic a fluent model.
Model Expression: The adult reads a short, meaningful segment (sentence or short phrase) aloud with proper expression, pausing, and pace.
Tracking Along: While listening, the child tracks the text with their finger and eyes.
Echo Back: The child immediately reads (echoes) the same segment aloud trying to match the adult's pace, rhythm, and intonation while pointing to each word as it is read.
Review: Continue this alternating pattern (adult reads, child echoes) through the passage.
Review: If the child struggles, reread the same section again for more practice.
